Discussions: ZabaSearch & Internet Privacy
Posted by Eric under Eric's Blog , Internet , IM DiscussionsJason: Wanna see something outright frightening?
Eric: sure
Jason: ZabaSearch. Type in your first and last name (and Texas for the state)
Eric: h-o-l-y c-r-a-p
Jason: Yeah, tell me about it. Pretty much, personal information from every apartment application I’ve filled out is on this site… including [other states I lived in].
Eric: I see my sister. It listed 7 main contacts for me (the last 4 addresses).
Jason: Crazy stuff, man. I couldn’t believe it was that easy to find.
Eric: And people get freaked out about listing a birthday online (as in my family history project. They don’t realize that there’s tons more personal about them available out there.
Jason: Uh huh. You should point that out, next time they gripe.
Eric: Oh, I will.
Jason: This isn’t the only type of thing like this out there…
Eric: Of course not, but it sure is fast.
Jason: During the last election, there was a web site here in town where you could enter in the name of a person and it would tell you their address and phone number, whether they were a registered Republican, Democrat, or other, and how often they voted.
Eric: …and how much they contributed. Sean McG. was impressed at how many rich people lived around him.
Jason: Not really, but it was pretty scary entering in my name and having pretty accurate information spouted back to me. heheh
Eric: There was one site for the GOP that did show that info. He showed me.
Jason: Oye! That’s f-ed up.
